SF 49ers Football
Will fantasy transcend reality for 49ers?
By now, the so-called "fantasy football experts" are hard at work, determining who they will be selecting in their upcoming fantasy drafts, scratching in their "safe picks" as well as hidden gems, to take the necessary steps to dominate in their leagues. And as the Peyton Manning's, LaDainian Tomlinson's, and Marvin Harrison's of the world are being plucked off the draft board as quick as Vernon Davis' 40-time, certain players are snubbed just because of what team they so happen to suit up for. Others, well others get overlooked because they deserve to be. Neither should be the case for the San Francisco 49ers this season. Although last season's team did not supply any one particular fantasy stud, this years' roster has the potential and ability to change those perceptions. With one full year as head coach under his belt, Mike Nolan expects bigger and better things from his team this season, as should fantasy owners in terms of statistical success from 49er players. The following are the top five 49ers that I feel can make a positive impact on your team this year:
1. Joe Nedney, K - Arguably the M.V.P. of a team plagued with injuries and inconsistency last season, Nedney made 26 of the 28 field goals he attempted, including 2 of 3 from 50 yards and beyond. Expect the same type of numbers this year, especially if the offense continues to struggle.
2. Antonio Bryant, WR - Bryant brings a deep threat to a 49ers receiving corps lacking such a player over the past few seasons. While with the Cleveland Browns last season, Bryant caught 69 balls for 1,009 yards and 4 TDs.
3. Vernon Davis, TE - This rookie has the ability to be something special. His size, in terms of height brings question, however his speed(4.38 40-Time), strength, and playmaking skills will be inviting to inexperienced quarterback Alex Smith, who may have just discovered his security blanket for the next ten years. Barring injury, a 60-catch, 7 TD season is attainable.
4. Frank Gore, RB - Despite being injured for much of the season, Gore's rookie numbers of 608 yards and coupled with a 4.8 average could be enough to entice, especially if he can supplant Kevan Barlow as the #1 back.
5. Alex Smith, QB - Yet another promising 49er rookie bitten by the injury bug in 2005, the number one overall pick in last year's draft had a washed out first year in the NFL, suffering a major setback with a knee injury that kept him out of games and slowed his development. However, with what seems to be an improved offensive line, and a full year of experience underneath him, the intelligent sophomore QB should make tremendous strides in 2006.
So, with what could be a promising year in reality for San Francisco, how the 49ers fair in "fantasy land" may very well determine their outcome and success in '06.
San Francisco wins toss for sixth pick in draft
The San Francisco 49ers won a coin toss Friday and will get the sixth pick in the April draft, followed by the Oakland Raiders.
The Bay Area teams both finished 4-12 last season, tying for the sixth and seventh picks. Because they also tied on strength of schedule, a coin toss was required.
The draft will be held in New York on April 29-30. Houston, New Orleans, Tennessee, the New York Jets and Green Bay have the first five picks.
San Francisco 49ers Strategy and Personnel
The 49ers awarded left tackle Jonas Jennings a $12 million signing bonus in the off-season. He played only three games in his first year with the club before seeing his season end due to shoulder surgery this week.
Also, the club's best lineman, Jeremy Newberry, might miss this week's game against the Bears due to a chronic knee problem that is getting worse and worse.
This might be the time for the 49ers to begin looking at some of their younger players. If Newberry sits, the 49ers could start second-round draft pick David Baas at center. Or, they could go with Eric Heitmann at center and put Baas or Adam Snyder at right guard.
Snyder is also beginning to see some work at left tackle, where Anthony Clement has played since Jennings was first sidelined for the Oct. 2 game against the Cardinals. "Anthony needs to step up his game," Nolan said.
Clement was called for two holding penalties last week against the Giants, including a costly one that nullified a spectacular Brandon Lloyd catch that would have placed the ball at the 2-yard line.
Peterson questions the certainty of his future
--Linebacker Julian Peterson, who has been tagged as the 49ers' franchise player two consecutive seasons, wants to have some certainty about his future. He would like the 49ers to award him a long-term contract or let him go so he does not have to live year-to-year again.
"I've been in the same spot for a while, so I want to know if I can make this my home or not," Peterson said. "Last two years, I don't know what's going to happen. I'm just waiting patiently.
"If they say, 'You had a great time here, be gone, we've enjoyed your time here,' that would be fine with me. I just don't want to be put up in the air and be on the waiting game."
Peterson said he fears being in the same position as defensive tackle Corey Simon, whom the Eagles made their franchise player. During Simon's holdout, the club released him and he became a free agent when a lot of clubs had already spent their cap space for the season. Simon ended up with the Colts.
Peterson said he isn't panicking yet. The second half of the season will determine what the 49ers decide to do with him.
"It's still early," Peterson said. "Our head coach (Mike Nolan) is pretty much the GM and he's dealing with getting the team together. Contracts are the last thing on his mind."
Niners' Parrish breaks left leg
San Francisco 49ers safety Tony Parrish broke his left leg early in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.
Parrish, who had started 121 straight games in his eight-year career, including his first four years with the Bears, hurt his fibula on a running play. He walked off the field with help from trainers after staying on the ground for several moments. He was replaced by Keith Lewis.
49ers Battle Bears, and Wind
Sunday, November 13, 2005
A Windy City welcome at its worst greeted the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday with 40mph crosswinds wrecking havoc for both teams playing at Soldier Field. A battle expected to come down to the defenses instead turned into a special teams square off, one that blew the Bears way with a 17-9 victory.
A 29-yard first quarter field goal attempt by Bears kicker Robbie Gould swirled in the air like a boomerang, foreshadowing the kind of unpredictable battle that lay ahead.
"By far, that was the worst wind I've ever kicked in," said 49ers kicker Joe Nedney. "Not even in practicing under some of the wind conditions at our facility, and I'm sure the winds at Candlestick can get going that good, but I haven't ever seen anything like that."
